HMS Erebus Wreck Finally Discovered
It took nearly two centuries to find.
In 2014, The Arctic Research Foundation of Canada finally located the wreckage of HMS Erebus, nearly 170 years after the men of the Franklin Expedition vanished.
The Erebus lay West of the Adelaide Peninsula, about 60 miles away from its sister ship on the voyage, HMS Terror. The wreckage is in good condition save for a chunk missing from her stern, among other damage. Exploring further brought the discovery of bottles of wine, desks, the ship's bell, and so much more. Scientists now face the task of trying to piece together exactly what happened to Erebus and Terror, and how they ended up in their final resting spots.
